The main objective of the research center, named the Dana Center Initiative for Neuroscience and Society, is to redefine the relationship between neuroscience and the public. This will be achieved through deepening community engagement, fostering research collaborations, and training multidisciplinary experts in the field of neuro-society.
Bringing Together Diverse Perspectives for Innovative Solutions
The center will bring together scholars from various disciplines including neuroscience, social sciences, education, policy, and humanities. These scholars will collaborate with local clinician-scholars, community partners, and organizations in South Los Angeles to address the societal implications of neuroscience research.
Key contributors to the center include the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Brain Research Institute, the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, the UCLA College divisions of life sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the School of Education & Information Studies, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Creative Activities. Together, they have pledged approximately $4.8 million to match the grant amount.
Leadership and Expertise in the Dana Center Initiative
The center will be led by five co-principal investigators, each bringing their unique expertise to the project. Dr. Helena Hansen, a professor and interim chair of the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, will serve as one of the leaders. Joining her is Dr. Denese Shervington, a professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Ashley Feinsinger, an assistant professor and chair of ethics in the department of medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine, will also play a key role. Gina Poe, a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College Division of Life Sciences, and Dr. Amy Woods, an assistant professor and program director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, complete the team of co-principal investigators.
