Sebastian Dohm-Hansen, a researcher in UCC’s Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, emphasizes that once age-related cognitive disease sets in during our sixties and seventies, it may be too late to make significant improvements.

Surprisingly, a simple 15p supplement may hold the key to a significant impact on brain health. Studies have shown that a diet rich in fiber is associated with more beneficial cognitive outcomes. Chemical messengers derived from the gut microbiota, particularly butyrate, have been found to affect the brain positively. Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced through bacterial fermentation of fiber in the gut, has shown positive effects on the hippocampus, a region crucial for memory and learning.

In the UK, the average fiber intake falls short of the recommended 30g per day, with individuals consuming only around 18g. To bridge this gap, it is advisable to increase consumption of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lentils, nuts, and seeds. Alternatively, a fiber supplement, such as inulin, could be considered. Researchers at KCL recently reported in the journal Nature Communications that a cheap, commercially available plant fiber supplement, costing just 15p a day, improved brain function in a group of people in their sixties.
